I absolutely adore beauty products that come in the form of an oil. Whether that be a facial oil, a hair oil, a dry body oil, a bath oil… the list just goes on. Shower oils are hands down my absolute favourite type of shower product. They just gives such a luxurious feel and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to find a good one. If I am completely honest, some of the cheaper ones that I have tried are just as good as higher end ones, if not better. Not only do shower oils feel really luxurious to use but they are super moisturising on my skin and I love that in a shower product – they are like an amazing 2-in-1 product that cleans and moisturises at the same time. This is particularly handy for days when you are stuck for time getting ready, or days when you just really, REALLY can’t be bothered to moisturise your body. Shower oils definitely make it more acceptable to skip the odd day of moisturising here and there. Having tried my fair share of shower oils at this stage, I thought I would share my current top two in terms of luxury versus cost, as well as one that is a bit overrated in my opinion.
Rituals – The Ritual of Sakura Oil – £8.50 (200ml)
First up is one from Rituals called the “Ritual of Sakura” (I think it was previously known as Sakura Spring). I first tried this line from Rituals when I got a few samples in a beauty subscription box, where I got the shampoo, conditioner, foam shower gel and body cream. I can’t say much about the shampoo and conditioner (since I have terrible hair and it doesn’t seem to matter what I use on it), but the shower and body cream were divine!! When I saw that they also had a shower oil available in the Sakura line I knew immediately that I would love it… and I do! I also love the meaning behind the branding for this line. On the back of the bottle is written, ‘In Japan the annual flowering of Sakura has been celebrated for centuries and symbolises the beauty of life. Make each day feel like a new beginning’. How lovely is that?!
The shower oil is made with organic rice milk and cherry blossom from the Sakura tree, so it is a very gentle and nourishing shower product. The rice milk extract makes your skin soft, supple and gives it a healthy glow, while the cherry blossom fragrance is so relaxing.
Once the oil comes into contact with water, it becomes a silky soft foam. It smells absolutely gorgeous too – sweet, but not overpowering. It leaves my skin feeling so soft and really hydrated. It really is such a joy to use.
Interesting side note about this product too – apparently it also helps prolong the life of your tan. Its intense hydrating properties reduce pigment loss in the shower, helping your tan to last longer (for those lucky people that this is relevant to right now lol).
The packaging of the shower oil is gorgeous too. It comes in a white bottle with a pump and some pretty lilac writing and detail around the pump. The oils costs £8.50 for 200ml which I think is such a good price given the luxurious feel and quality of this product. Even better for anyone who lives in Ireland – I got mine at Kildare Village outlet and I think it was around €6 or €7 there which is AMAZING! Plus, the rituals shop in Kildare village is absolutely gorgeous. It has a huge (artificial) tree (the Sakura tree I am assuming) right in the middle of the shop. It’s so pretty. I will definitely try and go back for more of this gorgeous shower oil.
Nuxe – Huile Prodigieux Precious Scented Shower Oil – £11 (200ml)
Next up is the Nuxe – Huile Prodigieux Precious Scented Shower Oil. This was another product that I was lucky to discover through my Marks and Spencer beauty advent calendar. I am a massive fan of the Nuxe Huile Prodigieux products, particularly their famous multipurpose dry oil and lip balm, both of which I have spoken about on my blog before. They are both amazing products and this shower oil is no exception.
I actually find this product to have more of a thick balm-like texture when I first squeeze it out of the tube, before turning to an oil when I mix it with water and I LOVE that! I really enjoy the formulation of this as it is less messy than a straight up oil, and it feels like it is really moisturising my skin as I rub it in. The smell of this oil is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! It is definitely my favourite scent out of these three. The fragrance is of orange blossom, magnolia and vanilla, and it all just works perfectly together. I could smell the product on the outside of the tube before even opening the lid!
The oil contains sweet almond oil so it very nourishing on the skin. The ingredients list says that it contains shimmer of mineral origin and whilst it definitely looks a little shimmery when I open the lid and squeeze it out, the shimmer certainly doesn’t transfer onto my skin. The packaging for this one is very basic – it is just a tube with a flip open lid, but it does the job and because this is a thicker balm-like oil, the tube makes it easier to squeeze the product out. Since I got mine in an advent calendar, I sadly only had a 30 ml tube that is completely finished by now 🙁 and I am dying to get another one. The full size tube is 200ml and costs £11, which seems like a lot of money for a shower product, but I think that the price is completely justified. This is a really beautiful product and you will honestly love using it. The best part is that I can still smell this on my skin hours after getting out of the shower.
Glossier Body Hero Daily Oil Wash – £15 (250ml)
Last up is the Glossier Body Hero. Now, I must admit that I have mixed feelings about this shower oil, and of course I will explain why. Glossier is a relatively new brand to the UK and there has been so much hype about it since it launched. People (myself included) have been obsessing over it, and for good reason. You may remember that I did a very detailed blog post on some of their skincare and makeup products that I genuinely love – so, when I saw that they were releasing body products too, and one of them was a shower oil, I knew I had to try it! I was fully expecting to absolutely love their Body Hero shower oil like I do with the rest of their products.
The oil comes in a very pretty pink bottle with a pump and stickers for you to decorate your own bottle lol (unnecessary but a nice touch I suppose). Before you put the pump in it has a red lid that you can also use if you pack the bottle for travelling, but I don’t love the red lid (white would have been nicer) All of that aside, the product itself is ‘okay’. It is described as an oil cleanser inspired by the ones for your face, but made for your body. The oil contains a blend of seven oils (coconut, meadowfoam, olive, soybean, sesame, grapeseed and sunflower seed). It also contains orange blossom Neroli blend to give it fresh scent. To be honest, I don’t get a fresh scent at all from this product and the scent is what I like least about it – the other previous 2 oils are miles ahead in terms of scent. The oil itself is quite thick (although definitely not as thick as the Nuxe one), but it does feel quite luxurious to use and feels relatively moisturising. This oil sells for £15 for 250ml. Despite being 50ml more product than the other two, I think this one is the least value for money. It is still a luxurious feeling product for the price but in my opinion it would be a much nicer product if they improved the scent. I feel as though this product is a little overrated and, for me, definitely comes number three. This doesn’t offer me anything that the Nuxe and Rituals oils don’t offer and they are less expensive and smell ten times better. I feel as thought this product has good potential but needs some refinement. I really wanted to like it but It was disappointing to me.
That’s it for my review of these three shower oils. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with either the Nuxe or the Rituals one. If you like something more gentle then I recommend the Rituals one and if you want something a bit richer (and smells delicious) then go for the Nuxe one. You can almost get both of these for the price of the Glossier one.
Let me know if you have tried any of these shower oils. I’d also love to hear if there are better ones you think I should try 🙂
Hope you have a great weekend! x
