If you have ever been to my home (currently a small apartment in Abu Dhabi), you will know that I am a fan of organised but pretty living. Coupled with the fact that I have to keep my stuff super tidy to avoid over cluttering my mini home, I love keeping things simple, clean and fresh with quite neutral colours and the odd pop of colour. My living space is currently made up of mostly blues, greys and whites with the odd plant here and there to give it that nice earthy and fresh feel (this is important when you live in the middle of the desert!).
In this blog post I will discuss a few of my current living space favourites. I hope my blue and grey mood board will give you some inspiration if you too are a fan of these colours or if you want a complete change for your living space.
Ikea Side Table…….
The blue and white IKEA side table (top left corner) is one of my newest favourites for my living room. It is so simple but is a little edgier than the rest of the furniture in my apartment. The table doubles up as a storage space as the top of the table comes off to allow you to use the basket underneath to store nice blankets or cushions. I don’t use the storage space as I think it can look a bit messy, but I absolutely love using this piece as a little coffee table. When we are not using this as a coffee table, it just sits pretty on its own and almost acts like an ornament for the living room. I bought this one in IKEA Abu Dhabi but I know it is also available in the UK.
Lamps and Marble…….
Like most people these days, I have jumped on the marble band wagon craze. I just love the calming feel it gives to a room and I’m a particular fan of marble plant pots and candle jars. Neom do a really nice selection of beautiful candles – this marble one is one of my favourites. I don’t own it yet, but would love to get my hands on it one day!
I also love this marble and copper inspired lamp from Oliver Bonas. I absolutely love Oliver Bonas for bits and pieces of homeware. They have some really cool pieces. Lamps are a great way to make a room nice and cosy, but lamps that look just as gorgeous when the light is switched off are even better.
Pretty Throws…….
For a long time I have been really really REALLY wanting one of the Avoca lambswool throws. Avoca is an Irish run family business that is known for its world famous lambswool, mohair and cashmere throws. They are absolutely beautiful and come in an array of colours. My mum and sister have the gorgeous multi-coloured lambswool throw, but of course I have had my eye on the blue and grey one and my mum surprised me with it on Christmas day!! (I think she may have had some help from my sister choosing this). Nonetheless, I LOVE it and it goes perfectly with the décor of my apartment, not to mention it is a lovely little reminder of home whilst living in Abu Dhabi.
Grey Sofa…….
My grey sofa bed is from old reliable IKEA. Given that we live in a one bedroom apartment, this thing has been amazing for when we have had visitors come to stay with us and it is surprisingly comfortable too. It is a good neutral base colour to work with and of course I add some nice cushions to pretty it up.
Blue Kitchen Unit…….
The kitchen in our apartment is particularly small and given that I am a huge fan of pretty crockery, when we moved in we really did not have enough space for all of our things that needed to be in the kitchen. I purchased the little blue cabinet (third item on the right hand side) from IKEA to act as an ‘extension’ to our kitchen space. It was amazing how much stuff this little unit holds and I thought the blue colour was so cute, especially since the rest of the kitchen was white. I can’t find the exact link to where this is on the IKEA website but they always do similar pieces. Another tip is to check out the storage units which they sell for children’s bedrooms. I have seen similar styled things there.
More Accessories…….
As I mentioned before, I love brightening up my apartment with plants and flowers. These IKEA plant pots and jugs are simple, elegant and pretty and would look good in any space. My sister recently purchased this plant pot for her pretty little cottage too.
Keeping in theme with my love for crockery (especially pretty cups), I am also a massive fan of coasters. I know it sounds boring but these can be both practical and pretty. Even when not being used to hold cups, a coaster can be displayed as a pretty decoration or to add a pop of colour to any living space. Some of my favourites are from Anthropologie. They have so many gorgeous ones to choose from. Anthropologie is another of my favourite places to buy homeware things. The only problem is that when I go in there I always want to buy EVERYTHING!
Let me know what your current favourite living space pieces are or if you have any suggestions for things you think I might like based on the above. I absolutely love interior decorating and I plan to produce mood boards for other rooms and spaces within my home, so make sure to keep an eye out for these.
Learning Photoshop…….
As it may be obvious from the mood board above, I am new to Photoshop so please bear with me! I am teaching myself through YouTube tutorials. I’d love to hear any good tips if you have them :).

Thank you for your wonderful ideas. I bought a lovely set of lamp shades a while back, that have different shades of blue and a little yellow but got stuck, and couldn’t see how I could incorporate it into the rest of the colours in the room. You have given me some inspiration and ideas how to make this work. I love the idea of a throw (especially your beautiful Avoca one) and blue accessories to bring it all together.
keep on blogging.
