I think that this is probably the first blog post that I have ever written about a shampoo and conditioner. I really don’t have very good hair and usually it doesn’t matter what I use on it. The result always ends up being the same and I never found a shampoo and conditioner that I genuinely believed works wonders for my hair.
Recently, however, I came across a hair care brand that caught my attention for a number of reasons. I mentioned Function of Beauty in a blog post here back in January and I have been using it ever since. I didn’t go into too much detail about these products in my earlier blog post as I hadn’t tried them at that stage, but I received so many comments from people who were keen to hear more about the brand and what I thought of it. Now that I have been using the shampoo and conditioner for more than 3 months I thought it would be a good time to share some of the details.
To give you a quick overview of the brand – Function of Beauty is a completely customisable hair care brand that create products that are cruelty-free, vegan, sulfate-free and paraben-free.
What makes Function of Beauty different to other hair care brands is that instead of a brand telling you what to use on your hair, Function of Beauty asks you what you want and need for your specific hair type and they individually formulate and fill a product that is unique to you.
The customising process
It is a 4-step process to fully customising your unique Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner, so I wanted to talk you through each step.
Step 1
When you log onto the Function of Beauty website, the first thing you are asked to do is build your hair profile by selecting from the following options:
Hair type
- Straight
- wavy
- Curly
- Coily
Hair structure
- Fine
- Medium
- Coarse
Scalp moisture
- Dry
- Normal
- Oliy
Step 2
After you build you hair profile, they ask you you to select five hair goals from the following options:
- Deep condition
- Replenish hair
- Fix split ends
- Straighten
- Hydrate
- Lengthen
- Volumise
- Colour protection
- Thermal protection
- Anti-ageing
- Anti-frizz
- Curl definition
- Shine
- Straighten
- Nourish roots
- Soothe scalp
- Oil control
- Reduce brassiness
The website gives you a brief description about each of the above hair goals and the key ingredients to help you decide which ones your hair might benefit from.
Step 3
Step 3 is the most fun part of the customising process. During this step you select a name that you want to appear on your products, the colour you want your products to be and the scent you want from your shampoo and conditioner.
I love anything that is personalised so I think these are all really nice ideas and make your products feel completely unique to you.
There are 8 very aesthetically pleasing colour options to choose from, including a limited edition and a dye free option. I wish I could have one of each to line up in my shower!
There are 6 fragrance options including:
- Peach
- Pear
- Flower
- Pineapple
- Eucalyptus
- Fragrance-free
You can also select a fragrance strength (light, medium or strong).
Step 4
The last step involves selecting the size of product which you want and the frequency. There are two size options; 8oz and 16oz and you can decide if you would like to make a one-off purchase or if you would like to receive a new shampoo and conditioner every month, every three months or every six months.
My order
As you can see from my order card below, I stated that my hair profile was straight, fine and normal. The hair goals which I choose and a description of each is listed below:
- Deep condition – ‘Moisturise and deeply condition your hair from the inside out to repair damage from heat and/or chemical processing’
- Replenish – ‘Replenish nutrient-depleted strands, reverse damage and protect your hair from environmental stresses’
- Volumise – ‘Rejuvenate limp, lifeless hair with noticeable volume, and cleanse hair free of buildup which may be weighing hair down’
- Strengthen ‘Increase your hair’s resilience and elasticity, and protect your hair from breakage’
- Hydrate ‘Restore your hair’s moisture balance, prevent future moisture loss, and treat your hair with long-lasting hydration’
The other customisable options I chose were:
Name: Claire (obviously)
Colour: Pink
Fragrance: Eucalyptus (strong)
The package arrived in a gorgeous box with my pretty products inside. I was delighted with my colour and fragrance choices, although next time I probably wouldn’t select the ‘strong’ fragrance option as it is sometimes a little bit overpowering. I guess that’s why it is called strong though lol, my mistake.
Straight up I will admit that I love the entire concept by the brand. I think the customisable element is such a great idea given that everyone has different hair types and needs. The fact that you can choose your colour and fragrance is also a great idea as it appeals to a much wider audience – again, everyone has different taste so it is nice to be able to select exactly what you want without having to compromise on the product.
Despite loving the branding and concept, I think it is difficult to comment on whether or not the product is actually helping my hair specifically in relation to the hair goals that I chose. My hair definitely feels softer and healthier but I don’t know which hair goal to thank for this. I choose the volumise option also and whilst some days I think that my hair does appear to have a little bit of extra volume, it’s definitely not as noticeable as I was hoping for.
I think that to really see a difference in the quality of my hair or to be able to tell if it has changed, I probably need to be using the products for longer than I have been. I must say that I have enjoyed using them so far but I can’t 100% say that they have improved my hair. Part of me thinks that the products might be a case of style over substance but I don’t think it is fair for me to make that statement just yet. I would also like to try a different combination of hair goals to see if that makes a difference and I am very tempted by the other fragrances too. For now I am going to continue to use the products and if I feel like I experience any significant changes in my hair over the next few months I will of course report back with an update.
One other minor thing that I want to note is that I find it quite hard to pump the shampoo out of the bottle. When the bottles arrived in the post they had a screw on lid which I kept because I thought it would be great for times when I need to pack the products in a bag. The product also came with a pump for each bottle which I usually love as it is meant to make it easier to dispense the product and I find that I don’t waste as much when there is a pump on the bottle. However, it can be quite difficult to pump the shampoo out of this one and I’m not sure why. The shampoo isn’t particularly thick or anything like that and in fact I have no problem getting the conditioner out, and it is definitely thicker than the shampoo. Perhaps I just got a dodgy one. Anyway, it’s not exactly a deal breaker, just a little bit annoying sometimes.
Btw, the products are made in the US but they do ship to both the UK and Ireland!
That’s it for my review of the Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner. I’d love to know if any of you have tried the brand yet and what your thoughts are. I definitely ‘like’ it but I’m still unsure as to whether these are going to be something that I feel the need to use over and over. Time will tell.
Have a great weekend everyone! x
