I don’t think it will come as a surprise when I say that bath oils are up there as one of my favourite kind of beauty products. I have spoken about bath oils many times on my blog and I love them for lots of reasons:
- They make my skin feel super soft and nourished
- They are a quick moisturising fix. I often skip moisturising my body after using a bath oil as I simply don’t feel like I need to. Bath oils are like a magic 2-in-1 product that cleans and moisturises at the same time.
- They usually smell amazing, and more often than not include some kind of essential oil that makes them a nice relaxing bath product.
One of my favourite bath oil products is the Lemongrass Bath Melt from Lush. I absolutely love these things but they are painfully overpriced here in Abu Dhabi so I thought I would create my own homemade version.
Since I first made a batch of these bath melts I have tried so many different recipes. I am absolutely obsessed with them! They are quick, easy and inexpensive to make yet they feel really luxurious in my bath and make my skin feel so soft and moisturised. I LOVE them, and I am so glad I decided to make them. They have fast become my favourite thing to use in the bath and I now keep a constant supply in my freezer. I cannot believe how good they are. As I said, they smell amazing, they nourish my skin and are cheap and easy to make…… need I say more?!
What you will Need
- Coconut Oil
- Essential Oil of your choice (optional)
- Grated fruit peel of your choice (optional)
- Silicone ice cube tray
The good thing about this recipe is that you can use as few or as many ingredients as you like. The only ‘essential’ ingredient is coconut oil, but I also like to add essential oils to give them a nice scent and a relaxing or uplifting feel depending on my mood.
The other optional ingredient is grated fruit peel. I like to add this mainly for aesthetic reasons lol. It makes the bath melt look so pretty, and the colour of the fruit peel also helps me to identify which bath melt it is which is helpful when you make a number of different ones at once.
Method
Step 1: Melt your coconut oil in a pot. I find that a cup of coconut oil makes about 10 bath melts but it depends on the size of your ice cube tray / mould. It really doesn’t take long to melt it down, so you can always add more as you go along.
Step 2: If you are using essential oils then add about 20 drops to the melted coconut oil and mix. Again the number of drops of essential oil comes down to your personal preference and how strong you want you bath oil to smell. I found that about 20-25 drops of essential oil to one cup of coconut oil was a good ratio.
Step 3: This step is optional but if you want to you can add some grated fruit peel of your choice to the bottom of your ice cube mould.
Step 4: Pour the coconut and essential oil mix into your mould and transfer to the freezer. The bath melts will become solid within about 20 minutes and then they are ready to be popped into your bath :).
Step 5: Once they are solid I like to transfer mine into a zip lock bag or a jar with a lid. I like to keep a supply of these bath melts in the freezer and then just pick one out when I fancy a nice relaxing and moisturising bath :).
When it melts back down in the hot water you will get that gorgeous smell from the essential oil and fruit and your bath will look so pretty and inviting :).
Below are a few of my favourite bath melts that I have made:
Coconut Oil, Lavender Essential Oil and Dried Lavender
I absolutely love the smell of lavender, and it makes me feel so relaxed, so it is the perfect addition to an evening bath. I added some dried lavender pieces to my lavender bath melts because I thought it looked so pretty and it also helps me to identify them.
Coconut Oil, Lemongrass Essential Oil, Lemon and Lime Grated Peel
Lemongrass is one of my all time favourite scents. I find it so refreshing and up-lifting. I thought the lemon and lime peel complimented the lemongrass perfectly :).
Coconut Oil, Sweet Orange Essential Oil, Orange Grated Peel
Sweet orange essential oil and orange grated peel makes for another great bath oil combination.
Coconut Oil, Rose Petals
The last bath melt that I made was simply coconut oil and rose petals. Rose petals are very nourishing on the skin and of course they look so pretty so I thought they would make the perfect bath melt :). You can see how the bath melts look before and after freezing them in the pictures below.
Those are just a few of my favourite homemade bath melts, but the opportunities are endless lol. If you prefer to have non-scented bath products and don’t have the time to pre-make the bath melts then a good ol’ spoonful of coconut oil straight out of the jar and into the bath will work absolutely perfectly too.
Coconut oil is such a great multi-use product and if I don’t use a coconut oil bath melt then I will normally just moisturise my skin directly with coconut oil after a bath or shower. It is such a simple but effective beauty product and I urge you to try it out.
I’d love to hear if you try to make your own bath melts too or if you have any bath melt recipe recommendations for me 🙂
P.s. be warned that you will have to give your bath a good scrub down once you are finished as the coconut oil leaves it feeling very slick and slippery and there will be little bits of fruit peel and lavender everywhere too lol, but I promise it’s worth it! 🙂
Have a great weekend everyone x
These are so cute, Claire! Love them!
Awh thank you so much Jen 🙂 glad you like them. I am addicted to them lol xx
