It’s been a while since I have written an interior related blog post and they are my favorite kind to write, so today I thought I would share a little corner (hallway actually) of my home and show you how I decorated it :).
I’m not even sure if I can call this space a hallway lol but it’s basically a small space that divides our living space from the bedrooms that you can walk though in less than a second! Nonetheless, it’s a space that I thought was worth decorating :).
The biggest challenge with decorating this space was definitely the width of the space that I had to work with. The hall measures just over 1 metre wide so the options for decorating were very limited.
Table
I knew that I wanted to have some kind of table to put things on, but given the width of the hall I knew that it would have to be a narrow table. However, I didn’t want a little ‘skimpy’ looking table so I thought a narrow but tall one would be the ideal solution, and so my hunt began!
I found the PERFECT little table in Jysk which is a Scandinavian store that sell some really gorgeous ‘scandi-style’ pieces of furniture at very reasonable prices. Jysk is a global retail chain and they now have three shops in Dubai which was is good news for me :).
The table that I found measures 90cm wide x 75cm high and it is only 29 cm in depth so it really is the perfect size for my small hallway. I love the mix of white and natural wood and the little slatted shelf on the bottom. The fact that it has two shelves is also useful in a small area as it doubles the space that you have to store things on.
Prints
I think the default method of hall decorating is to hang some photos on the wall, and of course that works too, but I am going through a phase where I prefer how prints look just laying against the wall, sitting on top of something, rather than hanging on the wall. I also like to stack prints of different sizes in front of each other as I think it adds some dimension to the space in a very simple way. It also saves drilling into your walls which is always a bonus lol.
I got this big print from Ikea and the smaller one from Desenio. Both of the black frames are also from Ikea and I thought that the black frames looked really well with both the gold and green print and they kind of brought all of the colours together nicely. One thing that I didn’t want to do was overload this space with colour as that could make everything feel cluttered and even smaller, so I opted for neutral colours that would make the space feel nice and fresh and airy.
Mirror
Another standard way to decorate a hallway is to hang a mirror on the wall. I do like the idea of a mirror in a hallway as it can really help to open up the space but I didn’t want to hang one right in the centre of the table as I feel like that creates a centre point that can make the space feel smaller. Instead I decided to go for this unsymmetrical look with the mirror and prints side by side which I think really helps to elongate the space rather than have one main focal point. I spread the prints and the mirror out above the table in a somewhat uneven manner but in a way that they compliment and fit in each other.
I got this little mirror from Maisons Du Monde and I think it looks perfect with the table as it blends with the natural wood that makes up the base of the table.
Plants & Flowers
What is any space without some plants :). I have so many plants all over my apartment and they are great for brightening a space up and making the air feel fresher. Here I have actually taken an offcut from a plant in my living room and popped it into a little vase to sit on this table. On a rare occasion I will also have some fresh flowers that I will also put here. Today I have just popped a single rose into a repurposed Jo Malone candle jar.
I have also put a plant on the bottom shelf of the table which I think is the perfect addition. I haven’t done this myself, but I think this bottom shelf would also look good with some nice books lying flat on top of eachother.
Candle
Last but not least I have added a little Diptyque candle to the table. I like how the different heights of the candle, the vase and the flower jar all work together. Just like layering prints, adding accessories of different heights can add some interest to a small space.
That’s it for this blog post on how I decorated my small hallway. I am always chopping and changing the layout of things in my apartment but I always stick to the same basic principles ๐
Let me know what your tips are for styling a small space. My next job is to decorate a nursery for baby Baker which will be a first for me, so any advice is well and truly welcome! ๐
The last interiors post I had written was about my dressing table and you can read that one here if you want ๐
Happy weekend everyone! x
SHOP THE POST
Hi Claire. I enjoyed reading this blog. Thank you.
Re your nursery -maybe keep a simple theme that will cover a boy or a girl – check can be quite nice? If you prefer something more childlike, Lee’s bedroom is jungle themed and looks great but not overdone!
Shelves (e.g.. where will the baby monitor go later on?) and storage – probably obvious! Different lighting options as you will be in there all times of the day and night!!! Nappy bin!!
Love and hugs to you both Dawn xx
